To stay in Spain, whether permanently or temporarily, it is necessary to apply for an identification document.

This identification document can be a NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) and will be needed by people who are not residents in the country. This number will allow the foreign citizen to open a bank account in Spain, buy a home, a vehicle, pay their non-resident taxes, accept an inheritance or a donation and any other procedure that they have to carry out in Spanish territory.

There is also the residence card document to remain in Spain permanently. People who stay in Spain for more than 183 days in the same year must obtain their residence card. Once it has been granted, it will serve to legalize the citizen's status as a taxpayer and tax resident, obtain a Spanish Driving License, receive Spanish health care, be able to open bank accounts as residents and be able to obtain the corresponding Certificate of Tax Residence in Spain.
